As per the data produced by Statista, the first half of the year 2022 has witnessed 236.1 million ransomware attacks across the globe. Here is a list of 7 major ransomware attacks in 2022 that are worth mentioning.
Nvidia
Nvidia, amongst the largest semiconductor chip manufacturers, was compromised by a ransomware attack in the month of February. The attack compromised company’s employee credentials and proprietary information online. Lapsus$, the group which took the responsibility of the attack, demanded $1 million and an unspecified percentage of a fee against the 1TB data they managed to capture during the attack.
According to many media reports, Nvidia’s internal systems were compromised during the attack and some parts of the business went offline for two days.
Puma
Sports equipment manufacturing giant, Puma, witnessed a massive data breach following a ransomware attack against one of their workforce management providers. Hackers managed to steal personal data of more than 6630 employees of Puma. As per the reports, the data also included their US Social Security Number. It took the company a few months to regain the data back.
Costa Rica Government
Began in the month of April, this was one of the major ransomware attacks in 2022 which not only impacted the ministry of finance and healthcare systems but also the private sector engaged in import and export services. Ransomware group, Conti, took the responsibility of the attack and demanded $10 million from the government which was further increased to $20 million.
SpiceJet
Indian Airline company, SpiceJet, faced an ransomware attack, leaving hundreds of flight passengers stranded in various locations in the country. SpiceJet, however, claimed that it was only an attempted ransomware attack and they managed to control the situation before facing a massive impact. The attempted attack exposed serious cybersecurity issues in their system.
Bernalillo County, New Mexico
Bernalillo County witnessed a major ransomware attack in 2022 when several county departments and government offices went offline. This paralyzing attack brought a jail offline by knocking the cameras, locking systems and automatic doors offline. The county filed an emergency notice in federal court due to the attack. The county officials, however, said that no ransom payment was made to the hackers.
Hensoldt
Hensoldt, a multinational defense solutions provider, faced a major ransomware attack which led to a security breach in some of its subsidiaries in the UK. Although Hensoldt hasn’t revealed the details of the attack, Lorenz, the ransomware group that claimed the attack and later listed the ransom as ‘paid’. Hensoldt is an organization that provides sensor solutions for aerospace, defense and security software for major defense authorities in the US.
Toyota
Two of Toyota’s suppliers, Denso and Bridgestone, faced a ransomware attack in 2022. The attack on Bridgestone, claimed by Lockbit, caused their systems and production facilities in Middle and North America to shut down. Denso fell prey to a similar attack in Germany. This attack was claimed by a ransomware group, Pandora.
